Saint François of Québec&#13;

Following the canonization of François&#13;
de Laval on April 3, 2014, artist Daniel&#13;
Abel undertook the task of painting&#13;
the first known portrait, as a saint, of&#13;
the bishop who founded the Québec&#13;
Church. He titled his work Saint François&#13;
de Québec [Saint François of Québec],&#13;
reflecting the words uttered by Msgr&#13;
Pierre-André Fournier, Archbishop of&#13;
Rimouski, a few months before his&#13;
death on January 15, 2015.&#13;
&#13;
A new start&#13;
“What sets my painting apart, compared&#13;
to other portraits, is the esthetic&#13;
I adopted: a contemporary, modern, and&#13;
energetic look. I saw his canonization&#13;
as a start rather than the end: a new&#13;
chapter about to be written.” The author&#13;
stresses that this modern interpretation&#13;
is a departure from what was done before, thus marking a new chapter: “We’re&#13;
far from done with this great man!”&#13;
&#13;
And the message carries through in the&#13;
The same man&#13;
choice of medium. The artist decided to&#13;
Daniel Abel wanted to depict Saint&#13;
use cotton paper – a noble, high-quality&#13;
François as a confident, welcoming man&#13;
stock – rather than the usual canvas.&#13;
in his prime, about to embark on his&#13;
This was another way of highlighting&#13;
major construction initiatives. The&#13;
the change he was looking to make. He&#13;
artist’s portrayal – showing the simplimanaged to find the white he needed to&#13;
city of a bishop who had disavowed his&#13;

noble origins – is as minimalist as&#13;
saintliness. The technique used was a&#13;
possible, with a neutral background and&#13;
combination of pencil, acrylic, oil, and&#13;

Liquin – a replacement for traditional&#13;
cotton paper, 600 gsm, using&#13;
mission. He also chose to outline the&#13;
varnish, which always ends up yellowing.&#13;

people. I’m sure he wouldn’t have liked that. I wanted him a number of sketches lying dormant in my boxes. I wanted&#13;
to remain the man his friends knew. He was already a saint to create another work – perhaps in pencil or in oil. But&#13;
in his own lifetime.” With this in mind, the artist was careful I always held back. I preferred to let time do its work.”&#13;
to reproduce the face by which Saint François had always&#13;
been known. “I wanted him to be recognizable.”&#13;

Ceramic work by&#13;
Rose-Anne Monna&#13;
Ceramist Rose-Anne Monna has created&#13;
many works depicting François de Laval, the&#13;
most recent of which was commissioned in&#13;
2014 by Cardinal Gérald Cyprien Lacroix,&#13;
after François de Laval had been canonized.&#13;
What sets this statuette apart is its blue&#13;
color, proposed by the Archbishop of Québec,&#13;
and the reworked preacher stance.&#13;
This is Ms. Monna’s most recent ceramic&#13;
depicting Msgr de Laval. Others, already&#13;
known to us, include a work housed in the&#13;
Grand Séminaire de Québec Chapel; another&#13;
one, presented to Cardinal Louis-Albert&#13;
Vachon in 1985, now located in the Archbishop’s residence in Québec City; a third one,&#13;
for Father Noël Baillargeon, in the Séminaire&#13;
de Québec; and the one for Cardinal Marc&#13;
Ouellet, presented in Rome in 2011.&#13;
