Msgr de Laval visits&#13;
La Prairie de la Madeleine in 1676&#13;

The parish of the Nativité de la Sainte-Vierge [Nativity of the Holy Virgin] in La Prairie will host two festive years in 2016&#13;
and 2017. A number of activities are being planned to mark the 175th anniversary of the present church and the 350th&#13;
anniversary of the parish’s foundation. Festivities will begin with an opening Mass to be presided by Cardinal Gérald&#13;
Cyprien Lacroix, Archbishop of Québec City. One of the giclées Saint François de Québec will be unveiled to commemorate&#13;
Msgr de Laval’s pastoral visit to La Prairie on May 25, 1676. Historian Gilles Bureau summarizes this event for us.&#13;
Upon receiving the papal bulls officially recognizing him&#13;
as Bishop of Québec on April 22, 1675, François de Laval&#13;
returned to New France after a four-year absence.&#13;
&#13;
His arrival was eagerly awaited. He resolved various&#13;
administrative issues, embarked on the construction of&#13;
the Petit Séminaire, and decided to set off on another&#13;
major pastoral visit of his diocese, from April to August&#13;
1676, to meet his diocesan priests who were scattered&#13;
from Tadoussac to Montréal.&#13;
Father Claude Dablon, who was Superior of the Society of&#13;
Jesus in New France at the time, wrote a detailed description of Msgr de Laval’s visit to La Prairie, from May 25 to&#13;
27, 1676. This account has been preserved in the extensive biography Vie de Mgr de Laval [Life of Msgr de Laval],&#13;
published in 1890 by Abbé Auguste-Honoré Gosselin, who&#13;
writes: “Msgr de Laval’s happiness at seeing so many&#13;
virtues among the poor Indians can well be imagined. We&#13;
cannot resist the pleasure of quoting in its entirety this&#13;
account taken from a Report that had remained hidden&#13;
for two centuries.”&#13;

We pay tribute to this great artist from Québec,&#13;
who died on January 14 this year, at the age of 71.&#13;
&#13;
The Jesuits set up missions in Sillery, Lorette, and La&#13;
Prairie. In 1667, Father Pierre Raffeix set up a residence&#13;
in La Prairie where Jesuit missionaries could stop for a&#13;
rest. Iroquois families and some French settlers quickly&#13;
came together to form a village around this residence.&#13;
When Father Dablon heard during a stay in La Prairie that&#13;
Msgr de Laval was on his way to Montréal, he left to meet&#13;
with the bishop and invite him to visit the mission. The&#13;
bishop was traveling light: “In visiting his diocese, this&#13;
great man was conveyed by two peasants in a small bark&#13;
canoe, followed only by a single clergyman [Mr. de Bouy]&#13;
and carrying nothing more than a wooden stick, a very&#13;

simple miter, and the vestments essential to a “golden&#13;
bishop”, as authors when speaking of the early Christian&#13;
prelates.” Msgr de Laval accepted the invitation and asked&#13;
the Superior to convey to the Indians his tender affection.&#13;
Preparations and greeting&#13;
The missionaries told the neophytes about the bishop,&#13;
since “this news gladdened the hearts of the entire village&#13;
– and the joy they felt at the mere hope of seeing him was&#13;
indescribable.” Branches were used to embellish their site,&#13;
from the chapel to the shore of the river, where they set&#13;
up a small dais and raised two bowers at each end of a&#13;
passageway. Father Jacques Frémin, the missionary in&#13;
charge, even allowed them to work on Pentecost Monday,&#13;
which was usually a day of rest at the time: “They all left&#13;
to don their finest garb, so they could rush out at the&#13;
sound of the first signal – the ringing of the church bell.”&#13;
While still in his canoe, Msgr de Laval was, surprisingly,&#13;
addressed by a Huron “captain” upon his arrival: “Your&#13;
&#13;
Eminence, stop your canoe and hear what I have to say!”&#13;
François de Laval willingly complied with these customs.&#13;
The captain had prepared an address in praise of this&#13;
noble visitor – his spirit, his virtue, and his dignity – while&#13;
hoping for heavenly blessings, and then invited him to&#13;
follow a solemn procession. ‘‘Msgr de Laval stepped onto&#13;
the shore and once he had donned his manteletta and&#13;
surplice, placed a blessing on them all while they were on&#13;
their knees.”&#13;
Father Frémin, who translated the speeches given by&#13;
François de Laval, then launched into an Iroquois rendition&#13;
of Veni Creator, which the Indians then took up, alternating with the French, who chanted in Latin. The bishop was&#13;
then accompanied by the Jesuits’ Superior, the Superior&#13;
of the Sulpicians’ Seminary, missionaries, and some&#13;
French settlers.&#13;

Beneath the first bower, a chief of the five Iroquois nations&#13;
delivered another oration. Beneath the second bower, a&#13;
catechist [referred to as “dogiques”] named Paul climbed&#13;
a tree trunk that he used as a seat and “paid a compliment&#13;
with incredible strength of spirit, piety, and eloquence.”&#13;
Upon reaching the chapel, the bishop blessed the Holy&#13;
Sacrament. Two choirs – one French and one Indian – then&#13;
sang Pange Lingua, Ave Maris Stella, and Domine Salvum&#13;
Fac Regem alternately.&#13;
Abbé Gosselin continues: “Once this greeting was over,&#13;
Msgr de Laval had arrived in our house and, seeing that the&#13;
Indians followed him, he had the men enter our room, letting&#13;
them all kiss his hand and bestowing a thousand caresses,&#13;
especially on those he was told were the most fervent. He&#13;
then moved into another room adjacent to the chapel,&#13;
where he let the women enter, and praised their piety in the&#13;
right proportion to the good he was told about each one.&#13;
He then sent them on their way, with a blessing for them all.”&#13;
In his account, Father Dablon notes that even the&#13;
non-believing Iroquois greeted the bishop, with each one&#13;
paying him as much of an homage as did the Christian ones,&#13;
adding that “[it was] as if the presence of such a good&#13;
shepherd had changed cruel wolves into gentle lambs.”&#13;
The bishop’s role&#13;
The next day, Msgr de Laval had “the Holy Spirit descend”&#13;
on the mission through the grace of the sacraments, which&#13;
he administered with all of the goodness and joy possible&#13;
and which the Indians received with admirable modesty&#13;
and devotion. “He began early in the morning, baptizing&#13;
ten adults: four men and six women. He then went on to&#13;
bless three marriages,” after which he celebrated a High&#13;
Mass sung by the Indians, most of whom had received&#13;
communion from him personally. “He also confirmed those&#13;
among the French who had not yet received this sacrament,”&#13;
even though the Indians were his main reason for being&#13;
there. Father Frémin then translated the prelate’s entreaty.&#13;
A feast&#13;
The dogique then gave a grand feast in his longhouse.&#13;
Knowing that Msgr de Laval wanted to be there, the Indians prepared places at the table, for him and his entourage, which were adorned with their best blankets and&#13;
finest clothes. “More time was given to the speeches, singing&#13;
and ceremony than to the feasting itself.” The bishop, “in&#13;
his excessive generosity and with his common touch,” visited&#13;
each family and single person in their own hut. The Indians&#13;
had embellished their homes with all of their most precious&#13;
possessions and offered him the place of honor, on wellworked mats and their best-looking hides. “His Eminence&#13;
could not have been happier or more edified by these&#13;
sincere expressions of affection and respect.”&#13;
To close the evening, he accepted an invitation from parents&#13;
who asked him to baptize their children – seven of them in&#13;
total. He then attended the greeting ceremony, which was&#13;
celebrated with much “pomp, as on the previous day.”&#13;
&#13;

He worked at the La Prairie mission for 16 years.&#13;
Day 3&#13;
Before leaving, François de Laval presided over a Mass at&#13;
which the Indians “sang very well, as usual.” He then prepared for his return to Montréal. “Just as he was about to&#13;
board his canoe, they all went down on their knees to receive his blessing. He did this for all who were gathered&#13;
there, and they followed him as far as they could, giving&#13;
him their hearts, just as he left his with them.”&#13;
Comments&#13;
None of my research has unearthed an account more moving than this, of François de Laval’s attachment to his&#13;
faithful and his flexibility in responding to numerous requests. What stands out here is his affable nature and his&#13;
concern with being close to the people, whatever their&#13;
status in life. Abbé Gosselin concludes: “As we read the&#13;
above account, we note the good grace with which this&#13;
devout bishop agreed to whatever was asked of him, when&#13;
the goal was to give pleasure to someone – even the most&#13;
humble of his children.”&#13;

Nicolas Sollogoub&#13;
Nicolas Sollogoub (1925-2014) was a Canadian&#13;
artist and master glassmaker. Born in France,&#13;
he settled in Montréal in 1950, and in 1964, was&#13;
hired by the Radio-Canada network as a graphic&#13;
designer, illustrator, and set decorator, later&#13;
becoming an assistant to Frédéric Back. He&#13;
also worked, during this time, at perfecting the&#13;
art of glassmaking and went on to create a&#13;
number of works in Montréal. The best known&#13;
of these is La Vie à Montréal au XIXe siècle&#13;
[Life in Montréal in the 19th century], on view in&#13;
the McGill Metro station.&#13;
His fascination with French history in Québec&#13;
led him to create a series of six stained glass&#13;
windows commemorating the origins of New&#13;
France, housed today in Saint Peter and Paul&#13;
Church in Brouage, France. The year appearing&#13;
on the main door of this church is 1608 – the year&#13;
the city of Québec was founded by Champlain.&#13;
