St François de Laval knew them well and visited them often. Let’s briefly step back in time, to the very early days of this great metropolis. A “mad venture” Ville-Marie was founded in 1642, by Maisonneuve and Mance, who both hailed from the Champagne region of France. Their goal was purely religious: to convert the Amerindians. They believed Montreal Island – the convergence point of various fur trading routes – was the ideal site for this. Unfortunately, it was also a convergence point for the Iroquois wars (which continued incessantly between 1643 and 1665) and the site of multiple epidemics (Baboyart, p. 20). Governor de Montmagny would have preferred they settle on Orleans Island. Christianizing the Amerindians was already a daunting task; trying to get them to settle in one place and become French was a “mad venture,” especially in such a dangerous place! Indeed, Marie de l’Incarnation once said: “It is easier to make a Savage of a Frenchman than a Frenchman of a Savage!” Ville-Marie could have been abandoned very early on. The founders of the Société Notre-Dame de Montréal [Society of Our Lady], Olier and de la Dauversière, died in 1657 and 1659 respectively, leaving a debt of 130,000 tournois pounds. As firm believers in the benefits of their enterprise, however, Montrealers exerted pressure to keep the mission going. The new Superior of the Sulpicians in France, de Bretonvilliers, bestowed the princely gift of the seigneurie [fiefdom] on the Sulpicians of Montreal, on behalf of the community (Litalien, p. 16). In August 1660, François de Laval made his first pastoral visit to Montreal, whose population of 375 included both settlers and Amerindians. From 1659 to 1683, the Saint-Joseph chapel in the Hôtel-Dieu hospital served as the parish church. The Sulpicians practiced their ministry and ran a seminary for educating boys. Complexe funéraire de la Cité, in Quebec City St. François de Laval stained-glass window in Peru Cardinal Gérald Cyprien Lacroix has graciously accepted to tell us the story behind the creation of a stained-glass window of St. François de Laval that has recently been installed in Peru. We wish to thanks him for the initiative and for this article. In the summer of 2015, I had the pleasure of participating, as a guest speaker, at the National Eucharistic Congress in Peru. This event was held in the city of Piura, where the evangelization of Peru began and from which missionaries set forth to spread the Gospel throughout the country. The Evangelization cross was erected in Piura in the early 16th century. This archdiocese proudly bears the city’s name, and the pastor, Msgr José Antonio Eguren Anselmi, is an old friend. Naturally, this led me to think about the cross put up by Jacques Cartier in Gaspé when he arrived on this continent. Our diocese, like Piura, was also fertile ground in which the Gospel took root and grew, spreading out over a vast territory. I also visited the Piura Major Seminary, where the chapel was undergoing renovations. They had decided to add stained-glass windows depicting Saints – both evangelists and pastors – of America. At the top of the list, of course, was St. Toribio de Mongrovejo, a major figure in the country’s evangelist history and patron saint of the bishops of Peru. I noticed a few empty spaces among the stained-glass windows and Centre d’animation François-De Laval the idea came to me spontaneously: Why not offer them a window depicting St. François de Laval, the great apostle, pastor, and evangelist in New France? The archbishop of Piura quickly accepted my offer. The window was created by artists in the capital, Lima, and installed in the chapel. The picture shows the final product. I believe this is the first stained-glass window of our beloved founding bishop in Latin America, and I am very proud of it. I have had the opportunity to share a few inspiring aspects of St. François de Laval’s life with the seminarians. My next suggestion, in the near future, will be to film an interview in Spanish, so I can provide more information on the life and mission of this great evangelist from Quebec. Isn’t it time we began seeing stainedglass windows of St. François de Laval here at home? Our Church needs the light that shone as he bore witness, to continue his mission today. † Gérald C. Card.
