WE ARE ALL PILGRIMS

For ages, human beings have been compelled to
set out on a pilgrimage to a famous shrine. This

our fellow beings. Little by little, one can see

brings him closer and closer to his Creator.
The purpose of this journey is clear. Mankind is
trying to reach God, a God who invites us to

towards the end of our great pilgrimage on earth,

action describes the condition of mankind, whose
existence on earth is a crossing, a voyage which

how it is through the thousand and one things
which make up our days that God's plans are
achieved . From stage to stage, we thus walk
-while waiting for the vision of Christ and the
endless sharing of the joy of God.
Jacques Lemieux, priest
Vice-postulator for the cause
of the blessed Francois de Laval

share his home for eternity. Christians are aware

of the road leading to this dwelling since Jesus,
God's very Son, came to earth to help us
discover Him and, through his life and teaching,

guide all who want to commit themselves to

The pilgrim's staff(also called "bourdon ") has
been an essential element of the pilgrim's

Him.

But, since each of us sees the undertaking of this
trip in a different way,it may happen that we feel
overwhelmed and powerless when it comes the
time to start the journey. It is then that the
blessed

TO PICK UP THE PILGRIM'S STAFF

and

accomplished

the

this

saints, who

voyage

successfully

in

various

circumstances, can give us lessons in morality
and behavior which are more similar to the life

conditions we live in today.

This is why it is in our interest to stop at such

equipment for so long that, from the Middle
Ages, especially

since

the

pilgrimage to

Compostelle, it has become one of the distinctive
signs of any pilgrim.
What is it used for? It has many uses. First of all,

it helps to support the walker when he is tired as
it allows to distribute the body weight between

the legs and the arms. Furthermore, it can help to
prevent falls in rough terrain. It also helps to
protect against wild animals and finally, it is used

places which particularly remind us of them, to
pray and meditate on their actions, especially

as a guide to find ones way and remove

when we wonder how we can distinguish God's
calling through all the solicitations we are faced
with. With their help, we can understand that the
many occurrences with which we have to deal

Symbolically, the staff becomes God's actions as

are all manifestations of God's will in our lives.

They are like markers which allow us to not lose
sight of the complex and narrow path we have to
follow until the end of our trek on earth. All the

saints and the blessed have perceived the various
conditions of their existence as revelations of
God's will.

When we are beset by doubt and cannot fathom
the meaning of all the contradictory events which

sometimes preoccupy us, we have to take a leap
of faith in God's wisdom. He knows how to free

us and allow us to reach, in spite of everything
that is happening around us.

All pilgrimages made to a shrine dedicated to

Jesus, the Virgin Mary, a saint or a blessed one
can be milestones in a lifetime journey towards
God. As we get closer to God, faith is revived,

hope strengthens, love fills the pilgrim's heart
and opens it enough to accommodate God and

obstacles.

it protects, defends and guides. "Your staff
guides and reassures me" (Ps 23). The
shepherd's staff or crook was used to keep the
sheep on the right path. Staffs of power and
authority, such as the king's scepter and the
bishop's crook are said to originate from the

pilgrim's staff. Some see in it the axis of the

world which foreshadows the cross of Christ, the

road to our enlightenment.

For us today, the time-honored expression,"to
pick up the pilgrim's staff"'\ means to accept to

get going again, to go forward, to be determined
and courageous, to accomplish our mission and
to forgo our safety net and comfort, in order to
live with more renunciation and trust.

Jesus invites us today to start the journey trusting
in God and with only a staff for the road (Mc

6,8), this being the staff of faith ,fragile, always
in motion, but at the same time always resting on
the Rock.!

A LOOK BACK ON THE YEAR'S ACTIVmES
"AN AFTERNOON WITH FRANCOIS DE LAVAL"

If you are a history buff and feel like spending a
relaxing and rewarding afternoon sipping on coffee,
you are invited to meet Francois de Laval, first bishop
of Quebec City. We will also visit the cathedral, its
crypt and the funeral chapel where his remains are
resting."This is the invitation which was sent to the
Quebec diocesans interested in discovering the
beginnings ofthe religious history of our beautiful and

Francois de Lavar\ This soul searching gathering
was an invitation to discover the founder of the

Canadian Church and to use his testimony as an

inspiration in our daily lives.

Just like a story told to a child before bedtime, the life
and work of Francois de Laval were progressively
narrated from one meeting to the next. Of his nine

pieces of advice left to the Jesuit missionaries in 1668,

Following booming publicity in numerous parishes, as
well as in the newspapers, on the radio and on
television, 66 people attended om three "afternoons

four were retained to reveal and to bring up to date the
unobtrusive spirituality which drove this man of God.
They are coherence in words and actions, patience in
evangelical tasks, serenity and modesty which helped
the souls to be reached and finally, conscious and

with Francois de Laval" held on the following

constant presence of God in the hearts.

In a spontaneous and relaxed atmosphere, people,
curious and passionately fond of history, culture and

Throughout the retreat, we learned that these four
recommendations, which targeted the Jesuit
missionaries who were working with the natives,
originated from evangelical accounts and are part of
Jesus' teachings to his disciples.

great diocese.

Saturdays: March 1^, April S"" and May 10*''.

genealogy, not only discovered the great person who

Francois de Laval was but also discovered the context

of the particular era he lived in as well as the
inheritance he left us and fi^om which we are still

proudly benefiting today.

Among the attendees, many of which were believers
and churchgoers, our blessed Francois de Laval not
only became a model, due to his faith and indefectible

surrender to God, but also became a significant
wimess for the Christians living within a declining
and unsettled Church at the beginning of this new
millennium. Just like our predecessor Francois, don't
we have to make a leap of faith and abandonment to

God when facing the precarious situation of our
Church ?

Even though this advice was given a long time ago,
the participants in the retreat recognized their actuality
and pertinence in our daily Christian lives. We are
also called to be missionaries in om respective spheres
of life and we need to develop, convey and especially
live these values which give and stimulate the need
for God in those aroimd us.

This time of soul-searching and discovery was filled
with singing and periods of prayer which led to
recollection and interiorizalion. The two afternoon

meetings were concluded with a short eucharistic

The success rate of this new activity obviously lies in
the continued interest, curiosity and the many

questions and discussions of the participants. The

"1</* Anniversary of the Francoisdela val animation Center''^
sprightly eyes, warm laughs, frank and friendly

the Cause of Francois de Laval briefly retraced the

the obvious pleasure of being together; such was the

The guests then moved to the priest's dining hall in

handshakes, hvely conversations, Sunday clothes and

prevailing mood on a gorgeous Sunday, last May 4' .

It was the 10''' anniversary of the Francois de Laval
Center.

At 2:00 p.m., the guests who so desired were asked to

join the diocesans for the annual pilgrimage ofthe Old

Quebec's Blessed. The pilgrims were invited to
"allow the light of Christ in their lives " just like
Quebec's three founders, Francois de Laval, Marie de
I'Incamation and Catherine de Saint-Augustin.

A thanksgiving mass at the cathedral, presided by our
new archbishop Marc OueUet concluded the

pilgrimage and brought together guests, pilgrims and
parishioners. After commxmion, three icons, (one of
which was the Holy Family) which were the work of

the Benedictines from Mount of Olives in Jemsalem,

were solemnly unveiled by three ladies of the SainteFamiUe Brotherhood. We know that while he was

bishop of Quebec, Francois de Laval actively
promoted the devotion to the Holy Family. He even
asked pope liuiocent XI for permission to institute a
solemn day in the Quebec diocese, to honor the Holy
Family.

origins ofthe Center.
the Jean-Olirier Briand building where a great

banquet washed down with an excellent wine was
waiting for them. They were in groups of six, gathered
around tables decorated with flowers and in no time,

the discussions quickly became lively. Once the meal
was over, each guest was individually introduced.

There were quite a few members of the Founding

Commitee, members of the Sainte-Faimlle
Brotherhood, canons from the chapter, some priests
from the seminary as well as people with a special

interest in the Francois de Laval Center.

1 believe that the bright-eyed looks, the spontaneous

smiles and the eager handshakes at departure time, are
a testimony of the joy and satisfaction of the guests.

Furthermore, phone calls and thank you letters

received in the following days confirmed that this

initiative, jointly planned and carried out by the
Seminary and the Francois de Laval Center was a
worthwhile endeavour.

A heartfelt thank you to all who contributed to this
event. Long live the Center and may God, through
Francois de Laval, his blessed servant, look at us

The guests were individually greeted in the Francois
de Laval Center, located in the old Saint-Vincent de
Paul chapel in the cathedral. With a glass of wine in
hand, they listened to speeches from the Superior of
