All pilgrimages made to a shrine dedicated to Jesus, the Virgin Mary, a saint or a blessed one can be milestones in a lifetime journey towards God. As we get closer to God, faith is revived, hope strengthens, love fills the pilgrim's heart and opens it enough to accommodate God and obstacles. it protects, defends and guides. "Your staff guides and reassures me" (Ps 23). The shepherd's staff or crook was used to keep the sheep on the right path. Staffs of power and authority, such as the king's scepter and the bishop's crook are said to originate from the pilgrim's staff.
